JOHN COLQUHOUN
JOHN COLQUHOUN was born between 1754 and 1774 in Scotland. His wife, according to the spoken history of the family, was possibly named ANN or SARAH; her last name is unknown, and it is possible that her name could be error (see discussion on records of Bluff below). The census of 1790 indicates John Colquhoun as head of family, listed beside Archibald Colquhoun and Malcolm Colquhoun, with a family consisting of only himself and his wife. By 1800, his family had grown, and the 1800 census includes John Colquhoun (called Colgahoan in index), age 26-45, with a wife aged the same, 1 boy under 10 and 3 girls under 10. Like Archibald and Malcolm Colquhoun, this family attended Bluff Presbyterian Church, and the records of said Church confirm the birth of three of the children before 1802. This appears to be an unusual couple, for John's wife's name is never recorded in the baptismal records of their three children at Bluff. It is unlikely that the omission on three records over a six-year period is error or accident, although speculation as to the specific "why" is fruitless.
The John Colquhoun who children appear in the baptismal records of Bluff Presbyterian Church between 1818 and 1822 did have a wife named Sarah or Ann (or both); however, that cannot be determined to be the John Colquhoun of this genealogy. See additional comment at details of John's son John, below. While the age span of the census suggests John was a contemporary of Lauchlin, Malcolm. Duncan, and Archibald, the dating of the birth of the children of the couple suggests both were born toward the latter limits of the census time frames (i.e., closer to 1774 than 1754). If we are attempting to establish the six families as a single generation of siblings, then we must place John as one of the youngest members. Perhaps only Duncan would be younger.
Comparing the records of Bluff Presbyterian Church with the census of 1800, it is certain one of the girls under 10 would be Mary, baptized Mar 20, 1796. It is possible that the son under 10 is John, who was baptized Aug 31, 1800, at Bluff. Therefore, according to the census records, John and Sarah/Ann Colquhoun had at least two daughters born before 1800 whose names have not yet been learned. The third child listed in the remaining records out of Bluff Presbyterian Church was Huigh, baptized Aug 23, 1802. The baptismal records of the Church are missing between 1802 and 1815, and the couple undoubtedly had other children who have thus far not been connected to this line by researchers. One additional child has been determined to be the child of the couple: Nancy Colquhoun, born 6/14/1803. Short histories of some of the children of John and Sarah/Ann Colquhoun follow:
- Girl COLQUHOUN, a daughter, name unknown, born between 1790 and 1800, indicated by the 1800 census out of Cumberland Co., NC.
- Girl COLQUHOUN, a daughter, name unknown, born between 1790 and 1800, indicated by the 1800 census out of Cumberland Co., NC.
- Mary COLQUHOUN, born late 1795-early 1796 (baptized 3/20/1796 at Bluff Presbyterian Church) in Cumberland Co., NC. No marriage record has been found for this child.

- John COLQUHOUN, born 1800 (baptized 8/31/1800 at Bluff Presbyterian Church) in Cumberland Co., NC. Genealogists of this line claim John married Sarah or Ann, and the couple had 3 children: Nancy, born about March, 1818; Christian, born about February, 1820; and Mary, born about March, 1822. However, this information appears to have been derived from the christening records of Bluff Presbyterian Church. Unfortunately, these same christening records match the children born to John Colquhoun, son of Malcolm Colquhoun, born 6/27/1788 and his wife Anne "Nancy" Buchanan; that couple was married 6/9/1812.
The children listed are consistant with the listing of that family given by Leander Cotton Calhoun ("Family History Written by L.C.Calhoun") in 1892. L.C. descended through this line, and in his writings he not only confirms personal knowledge within the extended family, but to have in his possession the naturalization papers of John Buchanan, Anne's father. It is noted that in one entry -2/20/1820 - John's wife is called Sarah in the baptism of Christian; however, L.C. claims this child also is a child of Ann Buchanan Colquhoun.
Both John Colquhoun, Sr. and John Colquhoun, Jr. appear in the tax records, and the real property records of Cumberland County include conveyances of land from "John Colquhoun, Sr. to John Colquhoun, Jr.". While it is not uncommon for two people of the same generation (frequently cousins) with the same name to be distinguished as Sr. and Jr. in common speech, in land conveyances it is very rare. Therefore, this appears to be a conveyance from his father to this John Colquhoun. No marriage record has been found for this child.
If you descend from this line, we would like to hear from you.
- Huigh/Hugh COLQUHOUN, born 1802 (baptized 8/23/1802 at Bluff Presbyterian Church) in Cumberland Co., NC, died before 1870 in Henderson/Kaufman Co., TX. Hugh married Nancy McLEOD 11/03/1825 in Clarke Co., AL. She was the daughter of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod, born 4/23/1813, and died 1/18/1889. Because of this cross-over into Malcolm Colquhoun's family, whose line was documented by early researchers, more information is available on this line. According to "Family History Written by L.C.Calhoun" dated August 12, 1892, Hugh Colquhoun was a Methodist minister who married his second cousin, Nancy McLeod, when she was 12 or 13 years old. Several genealogists of this line have taken the statement to indicate that John Colquhoun was the brother of Malcolm Colquhoun, Nancy McLeod's grandfather, also shown as a head-of-family in the 1790 census out of Cumberland Co., NC, although if John Colquhoun and Malcolm Colquhoun were brothers, the couple would technically be related as first cousins-once removed, rather than second cousins.
For them to true second cousins, John Colquhoun's father and Malcolm Colquhoun would be brothers. The family was included in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 censuses out of Clark Co., AL. L.C. Calhoun indicated "a few years before the [Civil] War the couple moved to Kaufman County, TX, where Hugh died and is buried (The area of Henderson Co. where the Colquhouns settled would later be named Kaufman). The couple had at least 12 children. Neal, Mary, Elizabeth, John D., Christopher, Flora, Georgia, Archie and Christian. Some genealogies include another child, called Martha. Details of the children and their families follow.
John D. CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 8/1/1827 AL, died 6/16/ 1861. He married Mary Caroline FORD 1/3/1849 in Clarke Co., AL. She was born in 1826, the daughter of Kendrick and Hannah Smith Ford. This John D. Calhoun appears to be the same individual sometimes found as John Irvin on family group charts prepared from internet postings. The couple appear in the 1850 census out of Clarke Co., AL, with their first child called Burwell therein, age 4 months. John and Mary Caroline Ford Calhoun had five children. William D. Whatley ("Genealogy of Malcolm Colquhoun, Christian MacCorquodale, Neal MacLeod, Sarah (Sallie) Bethune Scottish Immigrants to America in 1700s") identifies the children as: Burrell Jackson Calhoun born 1/31/1850; James Kendrick Calhoun born 6/18/1853; Hugh Wright Calhoun born 10/13/1855; Allen C. Calhoun born 1859; and Laura D. Calhoun born 1/24/1862. Allen C. Calhoun is the same individual called Allen Smith Calhoun on some family group charts prepared from internet postings.
Mary CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 1830 AL married William Scott PORTER 12/18/1851. According to L.C. Calhoun ("A Family History, written by L.C.Calhoun"), Mary Calhoun Porter died in AL; no date was given. William D. Whatley ("Genealogy of Malcolm Colquhoun, Christian MacCorquodale, Neal MacLeod, Sarah (Sallie) Bethune Scottish Immigrants to America in 1700s") identifies the children of this couple as: William Lawrence Porter born 10/7/1857; Lem A. Porter; Scott Porter born 7/16/1864; and Emma Porter.
Neal W. CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 1832 in AL, married Mariah FORD 11/10/1851. Mariah Ford was related to Mary Caroline Ford, wife of Neal's brother John D. She was born in 1832. The couple had at least 3 children: Martha Calhoun, Hugh Calhoun, and Hannah Calhoun. Nothing further is currently known about the family.
Hugh Kendrick CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 1835 in AL, married Mary Caroline Glenn EZELL. The couple had one known child: Grover Waterson Calhoun.
Elizabeth (Betsy) CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 1838 in AL is the same individual shown on other group sheets with a birth year of 1833. This appears to be error. In the 1840 census out of Clarke Co., AL, the family of Hugh Calhoun is shown with 1 daughter under 5 and 1 daughter 5-10. Mary, born 1830 is the oldest; Betsy must be under 5. In the census of 1850 out of Clarke Co., AL, she was listed as 12 years old, after Hugh (15) and before Margaret (10). Nothing further is known about her.
Margarite CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 1840 in AL is shown on the 1850 census out of Clarke County, AL, in the home of her parents. She was 10 years old at the time. Nothing further is known about her.
Flora Matilda CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 1843 in AL is shown on the 1850 census out of Clarke County, AL, in the home of her parents. She was 7 years old at the time. Nothing further is known about her.
Georgia CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 1846 in AL is shown on the 1850 census out of Clarke County, AL, in the home of her parents, where she is identified as a male, 4 years old at the time. According to William D. Whatley ("Genealogy of Malcolm Colquhoun, Christian MacCorquodale, Neal MacLeod, Sarah (Sallie) Bethune Scottish Immigrants to America in 1700s"), Georgia Calhoun was a female. She married S. Joseph BARTON, and they had 4 children: Martha Barton born 1867; Dillah Barton born 1869; Mollie Barton born 1876 and Larry Barton born 1879.
Samuel Archibald CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 1849 in AL is shown on the 1850 census out of Clarke County, AL, in the home of his parents. He was 1 year old at the time. Nothing further is known about him.
Christian CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun was not shown on the 1850 census out of Clarke County, AL, in the home of her parents. It is presumed her birth falls between 1851 and 1853. According to William D. Whatley ("Genealogy of Malcolm Colquhoun, Christian MacCorquodale, Neal MacLeod, Sarah (Sallie) Bethune Scottish Immigrants to America in 1700s") Christian Calhoun married D. M. BARTON, presumed to be a relative of S. Joseph Barton, who married Christian's sister Georgia.
Amanda CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 1854
Hannah CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun born 1856
Martha CALHOUN child of Hugh Colquhoun. Some family group sheets taken from the internet include another child identified as Martha Calhoun. No details are given. In two listings, Christian and Martha were listed as the first two children born to Hugh and Nancy McLeod Colquhoun, and their birthplaces are shown as NC. This is unlikely if the couple were married in Clarke Co., AL as shown by all genealogies, including the ones listing these two children. Another listing included Martha and Christian as being born after the 1850 census.
In the 1850 census of Clarke Co. H. Calhoun 47, brick MEC, his wife Nancy 37 are shown in the home with children Mary age 20; Neal 18; Hugh 15, Elizabeth 12, Margaret 10, Flora 7, Georgia 4, and Samuel 1. All children are shown to have been born in AL. Christian is not shown in the home. John D. Calhoun, age 22, and his wife Carolin3, age 24, are shown in another home, with their child Burwell, 4 months.
- Nancy COLQUHOUN, child of John Colquhoun born 6/14/1803, NC, died 9/1841, married John Edward SPIKES 3/20/1823 in Clarke Co., AL. He was the son of John Spikes, born 3/15/1800 at Stone Mountain, GA, and died 8/30/1872 at Spikes Prairie, Kaufman Co., TX. Consent to the marriage was granted by her father, John Colquhoun. This appears to be the John Colquhoun of the instant genealogy, both because the other John Colquhouns (of Malcolm Colquhoun's and Lauchlin Colquhoun's lines) have been eliminated as possibilities, and also because the family appears in subsequent censuses close to Hugh Calhoun, Neill McLeod, and an additional John Calhoun besides the older John Colquhoun; this is consistent with an extended family's resettlement. Nancy Colquhoun Spikes died 9/1841 shortly after the birth of her last child (perhaps as a complication of childbirth); John Edward Spikes remarried to a widow, Mrs. Lucinda (Pelts) Carter, on 1/11/1844, in Clarke Co., AL. Some time between 1845 and 1850, John and Lucinda Spikes moved their family near Nancy Colquhoun Spike's brother Rev. Hugh Calhoun and family in what was then Henderson Co., TX, in the area later included in Kaufman Co. John Edward and Nancy Colquhoun Spikes had 5 children: Israel, Margaret, Georgia Ann, Nancy, and John Wesley Spikes. Details of the children and their families follow.
