MALCOLM COLQUHOUN
MALCOLM COLQUHOUN married Christian McCORQUODALE about 1787 in Appin/Lismore Parish, Argyleshire, Scotland (marriage bands proclaimed 1/21/1787). She appears to be the child of Malcolm McCorquodale and Ann McColl of Achindarrich baptized 9/07/1768 (from records of Appin/Lismore Parish, Argyleshire, Scotland). Malcolm's age as given for the censuses (1790 over 16, 1800 26-45, 1810 over 45) suggests a birth year of 1764 or before; William D. Whatley ("Genealogy of Malcolm Colquhoun, Christian MacCorquodale, Neal MacLeod, Sarah (Sallie) Bethune Scottish Immigrants to America in 1700s") indicates a baptism date of 12/29/1771, but does not indicate where the record was found. Leander Cotton Calhoun (1/24/1848-12/1/1925), great grandson of this couple and one of the earliest documenters of the line ("Family History written by L.C.Calhoun"), and every genealogy based on his family histories, claim this family arrived in the Carolinas in 1792 from the Isle of Skye. Jesse Calhoun ("Genealogy of Malcolm Calhoun, Scotch Emigrant 1792-1935") even suggests this family spent some years in Virginia before proceeding to North Carolina.
The family does not appear in the records of Bluff Presbyterian Church until 1795 (although the records may be incomplete for the years between 1788 and 1793, as only 8 births were recorded, and most years had no more than a single birth), therefore a landing around 1792 would be possible, except for the census and tax records: (i) Malcolm was included as a head of household in the census of 1790 out of Cumberland Co., NC, compiled as of June, 1790; and (ii) Malcolm claimed 50 acres of land beginning at an oak 'saplin' in Cumberland Co., NC on 11/9/1791. In the 1850 census out of Clarke Co., AL, his daughter Nancy indicated she was 59 and had been born in NC (i.e., birth year of 1790-91). No record of the family - or the McIntyres who purportedly accompanied the Colquhouns to America from Skye in 1792 - exists in Skye, although both families appear to have been tenants of Stewart of Appin according to the public records of Scotland (in Colquhoun's case, as late as 1787) and the baptism and marriage records stated above apparently do belong to these people.
Malcolm claimed lands along the White Branch off Cape Fear River, near Bluff Presbyterian Church, in the northeast corner of Cumberland Co. The Bluff Presbyterian Church records compiled and published by Harnett County Library, Lillington, NC in 1989 as "A Colorful Heritage Documented, the Story of Barbecue, Bluff and Longstreet Presbyterian Churches" includes several records of this family, including what appears to be a family dispute between Archibald Colquhoun, Malcolm Colquhoun and Malcolm McCorquodale (punctuation missing in the original has been added for clarity):
"Bluff Church July 4th, 1818- Session met at the call of the moderator, present the Reverend Allin McDougal, Thomas Murphey, John Stewart, Archibald Colquhoun, and Alexander McAlister. Constituted with prayer. Mr. Archibald Colquhoun came forward and acknowledged that he was guilty of striking Malcolm McCorquodale lately of Sampson County in a fray between him and said McCorquodale, and Malcolm Colquhoun likewise came and confessed that he was guilty of speaking some aggravating language to Archibald Colquhoun, of which they were both privately censured and admonished. Session adjourned and concluded with prayer. "
Malcolm signed his name with a mark, and his name is spelled various ways on documents (and sometimes in the same document), suggesting he did not read English. According to his great grandson, he spoke Gaelic. In "Family History Written by L. C. Calhoun" in 1892, he stated "They [Malcolm and Christian Colquhoun] never learned to speak the English language plainly. They were regular Scotch." This is consistent with his membership in Bluff Presbyterian, where the Church records include a copy of a letter from the congregation asking that a Gaelic-speaking minister be recruited from Scotland, who would deliver sermons in the language of its congregation.
Malcolm and Christian McCorquodale Colquhoun had at least eight children. In the census of 1790, Malcolm Colquhoun as head of family was shown with a family consisting of himself, a wife, one son under 16 and two daughters. The son was John; according to the spoken history of the family, the oldest daughter was named Katherine (Kate). Anne (Nancy), born late 1790 or early 1791 appears to be the second daughter included in the census of 1790 but still shown as under 10 in the 1800 census. In the 1800 census, Malcolm Colquhoun, called Colgahonn in the census index, is shown as age 26-45, with a wife 26-45, 1 boy 10-16, 2 boys under 10, 1 girl 10-16 and 1 girl under 10, next door to Daniel M-Corcidale. Duncan is established by the baptismal records of Bluff Presbyterian Church as one of the younger boys. Malcolm was probably born before 1795; he was not included in the published baptismal records of Bluff Presyterian Church between 1795-1802, and he owned land in Cumberland County before 1814, when he executed a deed to his father. In the 1810 census, Malcolm Colquhoun is shown over 45, with a wife 26-45, 1 boy under 10, 2 boys 10-16, 1 boy 16-26, 2 girls under 10, and 2 girls 16-26. This fits the known family very well, and indicates no unknown children. Neil born 5/18/1802, was baptized 7/20/1802 at Bluff Presbyterian Church; Mary (born about 1805) and Christian Ann (born before the 1810 census), were also probably baptized at Bluff, although the Church records are missing for the years between 1803 and 1814. Malcolm and Christian MacCorquodale Colquhoun migrated to Clarke Co., AL early 1820s (they were not included in the 1820 census out of Cumberland Co., NC, so the move was probably complete by 1821). Malcolm died 8/28/1823, Christian died 3/3/1828, and they are buried in Clark Co., AL, in what was known as the Old Courthouse Graveyard. A stone was erected in the Old Union Cemetery in Grove Hill, AL in the family plot in memory of the couple. Short histories of the families of the children of Malcolm and Christian McCorquodale Colquhoun follow.
- Katherine "Kate" COLQUHOUN, daughter of Malcolm Colquhoun born probably 1787 in Scotland, married Colin McINTYRE in Cumberland Co., NC in 1814. He was born around 1790. The couple had only three children: Margaret born 1815, Duncan born 1817 and Colin Calvin born 1820. Colin McIntyre died 10/15/1819, and Katherine Colquhoun McIntyre then married John McINTYRE 10/22/1821. He was the younger brother of her first husband, born about 1792. By her second marriage, Kate McIntyre gave birth to three children: a daughter, stillborn in 1822, John McIntyre, Jr. born 1824, and Mary Jane born 1826. Katherine McIntyre died in 1850; her second husband died in 1859.
This daughter is not mentioned by Leander Cotton Calhoun in his memoirs, but is mentioned by Jesse Calhoun, who documented the line in 1935 using materials developed by Leander Cotton Calhoun and others. Jesse Calhoun states that Kate Calhoun McIntyre and family moved to some point on the Mississippi River, "some say Miliken Bend", and lost touch with the rest of the family. A little detail of these children is available:
Margaret McINTYRE born 3/12/1815 (baptized Old Bluff Presbyterian Church 4/30/1815), died 11/01/1890. Marital status is unknown.
Duncan McINTYRE born 1817, married Mary Ann BAKER 4/12/1842. Nothing further is known about this couple.
Colin Calvin McINTYRE born 1820 after his father died, died 1869. William D. Whatley ("Genealogy of Malcolm Colquhoun, Christian MacCorquodale, Neal MacLeod, Sarah (Sallie) Bethune Scottish Immigrants to America in 1700s") indicates he and Jeanette McINTYRE had a son named Crastis Colin McIntyre, born 3/12/1855, before his marriage to Thedias Sarah REYNOLDS 1/29/1856. Colin Calvin and Thedias Reynolds McIntyre had six children: Samuel Sylvester McIntyre born 1856; Mary Eudora McIntyre born 7/1/1859; Margaret Emma McIntyre born 8/12/1862; Sarah McIntyre born 1864; William Shaw McIntyre born 12/8/1867; and Thomas McIntyre born 1869.
John McINTYRE, Jr. born 1824, died 8/24/1887, married Mary PATTERSON 2/24/1850. She was born about 1832 and died 1/24/1875. The couple had 7 children: Mary Katherine McIntyre born 5/26/1851; Eugene C. McIntyre born 11/4/1852; Franklin Patterson McIntyre born 1854; Lew W. McIntyre born 11/1858; Revella Leoma McIntyre born 12/11/1860; Aurea Cynthia McIntyre born 11/01/1862; and Annie L. McIntyre born about 1864.
Nothing further is known about the last child of this couple, Mary Jane McINTYRE born 1826.
- John COLQUHOUN, son of Malcolm Colquhoun, born 6/27/1788 in Scotland married Anne "Nancy" BUCHANAN 6/9/1812; she was born 2/-/1792 (according to Leander Cotton Calhoun, Nancy Buchanan was born on the voyage). L.C's statement that Nancy's family came from Argyleshire, Scotland on the same boat as Malcolm and Christian McCorquodale Colquhoun is consistent with the family's being from that region, rather than Skye. This John Colquhoun died 11/09/1842; Nancy Buchanan died 9/13/1862. The couple had at least 11 children, several of whom were christened at Bluff Presbyterian Church (in the church records Nancy Buchanan is called Ann or Anne, except for the entry 2/20/1820, when she is called Sarah in baptism of Christian). Short histories of the children follow.
John COLQUHOUN, son of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 1/6/1814, married his cousin Sarah (Sallie) McLEOD, 12/27/1837. She was born 1/11/1822, the daughter of his father's sister, Nancy Colquhoun and her husband Neill McLeod. They had 14 children: Charles Wesley Colquhoun born 10/25/1839, Neal McLeod Colquhoun born 4/28/1841, Hugh Buchanan Colquhoun born 12/14/1842, Eugene Sue Colquhoun born 1/14/1845, Virginia Colquhoun born 8/5/1846, Leander Cotton Colquhoun born 1/24/1848, Myra Colquhoun born 1/13/1850, Eliza Colquhoun born 3/12/1851, John Colquhoun born 2/1/1853, Walter Robinson Colquhoun born 8/1/1854, Ella Colquhoun born 3/10/1857, Leila Colquhoun born 1/27/1859, Edwin Orlando Colquhoun born 9/5/1861, and Eva Colquhoun born 9/14/1866.
Daniel "Donald" COLQUHOUN son of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 8/11/1816, recorded in baptismal records 11/10/1816 as "Donald" (while this may be an error in the Bluff Presbyterian Church records, the substitution of Donald for others known to be named Daniel, such as Daniel Stewart, may indicate that Donald was a common nickname for Daniel) married Christian GRAHAM 2/5/1840. She was born 6/23/1811, the daughter of Daniel and Anne "Nancy" Colquhoun Graham (see line of Anne "Nancy" Colquhoun and Daniel GRAHAM), and sister of the wife of Daniel's uncle Duncan. The couple had 7 children before Christian Graham died 3/5/1860. Daniel Colquhoun married Martha FORD 3/28/1861 and there were 8 children born of that marriage.
Leander Cotton Calhoun describes Daniel Colquhoun as a man of many occupations: carpenter, farmer, blacksmith, cabinet maker, etc., including making coffins and helping bury the dead when he lived in AL. His family lived near the Church, and frequently had other family members spend several days when Church meetings were protracted. Daniel Colquhoun died 3/17/1899.
Children of both marriages were: Nancy Jane Colquhoun born 9/21/1840, Mary Margaret Colquhoun born 11/02/1842, John Graham Colquhoun born 1/31/1845, Evander NcNair Colquhoun born 2/08/1847, Duncan Caldwell Colquhoun born 4/15/1850, Sarah Colquhoun born 6/19/1852, Daniel Bain Colquhoun born 8/15/1854, David Alexander Colquhoun born 3/02/1862, Larkin Alonzo Colquhoun born 12/04/1863, Charles Wesley Colquhoun born 8/21/1866, Hannah Virginia Colquhoun born 5/06/1868, Clara Ann Colquhoun born 3/17/1870, Kendrick Smith Colquhoun born 11/15/1871, Mattie Ford Colquhoun born 7/29/1879 and Leona Seabell Colquhoun born 7/29/1879.
Nancy Jane COLQUHOUN, daughter of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 2/23/1818 (baptized 3/29/1818 at Bluff), married John STEWART 1/7/1837, and the couple moved to AL before 1840. Stewart was born 3/7/1815 (christened 4/30/1815), the son of Dougald and Mary Graham Stewart and brother of David Stewart, who married Nancy Jane's sister Sarah Margaret. The couple had 13 children: Dougald Stewart born 11/11/1837, Mary Jane Stewart born 7/10/1839, Nancy Caroline (Carrie) Stewart born 4/30/1841, Sarah E. Stewart born 12/28/1842, Margaret Isabel Stewart born 10/14/1844, Frances (Fannie) Stewart born 11/25/1846, Martha (Mattie) Stewart born 10/25/1848, John Calhoun Stewart born 1/09/1852, Elizabeth Virginia Stewart born 1/30/1853, Catherine Amanda Stewart born 2/22/1855, Virena Florence Stewart born 3/19/1857, Arrilla Stewart and Melissa Stewart both born 8/16/1859. John Stewart died 8/11/1865, and according to Leander Cotton Calhoun, Nancy Jane Colquhoun Stewart lived many years as a widow until her death 9/9/1888. She was described as a small woman who looked rather delicate, but managed to sustain the large family after her husband's death.
Christian COLQUHOUN, daughter of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 12/19/1819 , baptized 2/20/1820 at Bluff Presbyterian Church), never married, but lived with her mother until she ceased to keep house, then lived with her sisters Nancy and then Effa. She died 2/26/1895.
Mary COLQUHOUN daughter of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 11/7/1821, christened 3/24/1822 Old Bluff Presbyterian Church, married Golden W. HICKS. He was the brother of Mary Elmira Hicks, who married Mary's cousin, Malcolm Colquhoun (son of Duncan and Rachel Graham Colquhoun). The couple had no known children when Mary Colquhoun Hicks died 11/07/1847, according to Leander Cotton Calhoun, only a few years after she married.
Malcolm COLQUHOUN, son of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 8/18/1823, married Malissa Elizabeth COX 1/29/1852. She was born 10/1/1830, and was the sister of Mathew Cox, who married Malcolm's sister Effie, and Emily Cox, who married Malcolm's brother Angus. The couple had 4 children, i.e. Janie Colquhoun born 1854, John Colquhoun born 1856, Ella Ruth Colquhoun born 1858 and David A. Colquhoun born 1860, before Malcolm died 12/20/1863 at Shiloh, during the Civil War. Leander Cotton Calhoun also indicated that it was Angus who notified the family of Malcolm's death from a gunshot in the leg.
Catherine COLQUHOUN daughter of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 8/28/1826, died 9/28/1832 age 6 years.
Sarah Margaret COLQUHOUN, daughter of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 3/15/1829, married David STEWART 1/13/1847. Stewart was born 10/28/1820, the son of Dougald and Mary Graham Stewart (baptized at Bluff Presbyterian Church 3/18/1821) and brother of John Stewart, who married Sarah Margaret's sister Nancy Jane. The couple had 6 children; however the names of only 5 are known to date: Amanda Stewart born 10/20/1847, Anna Marsy Stewart born 10/10/1849, John J. Stewart born 5/10/1852, Harland A. Stewart born 7/31/1855 and Angus Augustus Stewart born 2/23/1857. Amanda and Angus both survived to majority; the rest, including the unknown child, died before Sarah Margaret died in 1859.
Effa (Effie) COLQUHOUN daughter of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 3/24/1831, married Rev. Mathew COX 1/10/1855. He was born 4/29/1833, and was the brother of Malissa Elizabeth Cox, who married Effie's brother Malcolm, and Emily Cox, who married Effie's brother Angus. The couple had 4 children: Mary Elizabeth Cox born 1/1/1856, Henry Hilliard Cox born 8/6/1858, Theophulus Walton Cox born 12/26/1860 and Mealina Levincy Cox born 9/20/1868. Mathew died 11/25/1897; Effie died 5/7/1914. Leander Cotton Calhoun indicates that Mathew Cox lost his leg from injuries received in the Civil War.
Angus COLQUHOUN son of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 2/7/1834 married Emily (Emma) COX 12/1/1853. She was stated by Leander Cotton Calhoun to have been the sister of "Uncle Mathew Cox". The couple had two children before Angus Colquhoun died at Jonesboro, GA with the infantry from LA in the Civil War: Angus Colquhoun, Jr, born 1859 and Henry Colquhoun, born unknown. According to Leander Cotton Calhoun, Angus Colquhoun, Sr. was killed about the second or third year of the war. He had been furloughed shortly before he died, but could not cross the battle lines to return to LA to visit his wife and family, so spent his furlough with relatives in AL around the old family home. Shortly after he returned to his unit, he was killed. Leander Cotton Calhoun also indicated that it was Angus who notified the family of Malcolm's death, so the date of Angus's death would have been after 12/20/1863 (the date of Malcolm's death).
Catherine Jane COLQUHOUN, daughter of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun, born 10/2/1838, married Robert J. ANDERSON 12/31/1868. The couple had 4 children: Cora Anderson, Jesse Anderson, Arthur Anderson and Harvey Anderson.
- Ann "Nancy" COLQUHOUN, daughter of Malcolm Colquhoun born late 1790 or early 1791, married Neill McLEOD (Jr.) 1812 (marriage bonds posted 6/29/1812, John Colquhoun was bondsman) in NC. He was born about 1783, the son of Neill McLeod and Sarah "Sallie" Bethune. Neill McLeod died in 1867; Nancy Colquhoun McLeod died 3/07/1868. In the 1850 census out of Clarke Co., AL, this family was listed as Neal McLeod, a farmer born in NC, age 61, with wife Nancy, age 59, also born NC, with one son, John, 19, a farmer born in AL.
Leander Cotton Calhoun, in "Family History Written by L.C.Calhoun" introduces some family stories of the couple.
"I am sorry I can not give the time that my grandfather came to Ala. I know he came before my mother was born (1822) and many years before the Indians left the state. It has been over 70 years. He died when I was a small child, but I have a distinct remembrance of him. I have the recollection that he was particularly kind to his grandchildren, and to go to his house and eat apples, walnuts, pears, etc., was much enjoyed. The house in which he lived and in which my father and mother were married is still there, but not occupied. The very remembrance of these things is pleasant. I have in my mind a plain picture of that dear old home and it's surroundings. After my grandfather's death, which I think occurred about 1856 or 1857, my grandmother continued to keep house with an orphan boy they had reared by the name of John Gilbert. He was distantly related to our family. He went to the war and died. My grandmother was a good woman and one of remarkable memory. She never seemed to forget anything scarcely. As long as she kept house she held family prayer. I remember when I was a small boy I would sometime spend the night there and she would read a chapter in the Bible and then kneel and pray. This will impress a child very deeply and favorably too, generally speaking. I love the smell of the old fashioned roses and flowers that used to grow in my grandmother's yard, and I love to think of the visits that she used to make to 'our house' bringing her work and telling us children little stories of the 'long ago'. She was a woman that enjoyed the original, awkward and witty sayings of children, and would often repeat them with a hearty laugh. I give one instance. One of her grandchildren, a little girl, came to her house one day and Grandma said to her 'What did you come for?' She answered, 'to keep you lonesome'."
The couple had at least 8 children: Neill, Christian, Nancy, Daniel, Sarah, Malcolm, Flora and John. Another child, John Gilbert, who is described by Leander Cotton Calhoun as being distantly related to the family, was raised by Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod. Details of their children and their families follow.
Neill (Neal) McLEOD, son of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod born 1811 in Clarke Co, AL never married, he died young. Leander Cotton Calhoun tells that this child wandered away from the house and fell into a 'hole of water' where he drowned.
Christian McLEOD, daughter of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod born before 1813, married John E FRANKLIN 1/14/1847, and had a child named Isobel Franklin.
Nancy McLEOD, daughter of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod born 4/23/1813, married Hugh COLQUHOUN when she was young - either 12 or 13 years, according to Leander Cotton Calhoun. He was the son of John Colquhoun of Cumberland Co. NC baptized at Bluff Presbyterian Church 8/23/1802. Hugh's father John appears to be related to - possibly the brother of - Malcolm Colquhoun of this genealogy [see genealogy out of John COLQUHOUN]; the couple had at least 12 children; for details on this couple, see genealogy out of John Colquhoun.
Daniel McLEOD, son of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod born 25 OCT 1819, married Matilda ROBINSON 11/29/1838; the couple had 10 children: Arsenia McLeod born 9/13/1839, Sarah (Sallie) McLeod born 1841, Achsah (Axie) McLeod born 7/17/1843, Amos Neal McLeod born 5/14/1845, Rebecca McLeod born 2/4/1847, Stephen Wesley McLeod born 12/7/1848, Christian (Kish) McLeod born 11/22/1850, Alvira McLeod born 11/7/1852, John Morris McLeod born 8/23/1854, and Jesse McLeod born 5/2/1856
Sarah McLEOD, daughter of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod born 1/11/1822 married her cousin, John COLQUHOUN 12/27/1837; he was born 1/6/1814, the son of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun. They had 14 children: Charles Wesley Colquhoun born 10/25/1839, Neal McLeod Colquhoun born 4/28/1841, Hugh Buchanan Colquhoun born 12/14/1842, Eugene Sue Colquhoun born 1/14/1845, Virginia Colquhoun born 8/5/1846, Leander Cotton Colquhoun born 1/24/1848, Myra Colquhoun born 1/13/1850, Eliza Colquhoun born 3/12/1851, John Colquhoun born 2/1/1853, Walter Robinson Colquhoun born 8/1/1854, Ella Colquhoun born 3/10/1857, Leila Colquhoun born 1/27/1859, Edwin Orlando Colquhoun born 9/5/1861, and Eva Colquhoun born 9/14/1866.
Malcolm McLEOD, son of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod born 3 APR 1824, married Ruth Pugh CHAPMANN 9/30/1847. The couple had 7 children before his death in the Civil War: Giles Chapman McLeod born 10/13/1848, Ira Jared McLeod born 6/23/1850, Eustus Monroe McLeod born 2/6/1852, Alice Rebecca McLeod born 3/15/1855, Laird Lafayette McLeod born 7/18/1857, Pugh Leslie McLeod born 9/29/1859 and Litka Jesse McLeod born 7/10/1861.
Flora McLEOD, daughter of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod born 4/21/1828 married Wesley ROBINSON 11/14/1844. The couple had 11 children: Florence Elosia Robinson born 9/5/1845, Viola Vestine Robinson born 3/30/1847, Axie Louvenia Robinson born 7/14/1849, Helen Agnes Robinson born 5/20/1851, Marian Fredonia Robinson born 4/16/1853, Lemuel King Robinson born 3/14/1855, Giles Ernest Robinson born 5/16/1857, Amos Neal Robinson born 1/1/1859, Daniel Wesley Robinson born 10/7/1861, John Jesse Robinson born 10/3/1863 and Eugenia Myrah (Jennie) Robinson born 10/1/1866.
John McLEOD, son of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod born 9/22/1829, married his cousin, Christian COLQUHOUN 12/25/1850. She was the child of Nancy Colquhoun's brother Duncan and his wife Rachel Graham. They had 5 children before he died in the Civil War, 1864: Frances Isabella McLeod born 7/5/1852, William Allen McLeod born 9/16/1854, Lionel Erastus McLeod born 6/26/1857, Archibald Lonza McLeod born 12/27/1859, and Mary Alice McLeod born 6/11/1862.
John GILBERT, raised by the family, never married. He died in the Civil War.
- Malcolm COLQUHOUN, child of Malcolm Colquhoun, was probably born around 1793, although some researchers give his birth year as 1797. According to the real property records of Cumberland Co. NC, it is clear he owned land by 1814, so the earlier date is more likely. This Malcolm Colquhoun married Jeanette (Jennet) BUMPERS (BUMPASS), born about 1797. Leander Cotton Calhoun identified the wife of Malcolm Colquhoun as Jennet Bumpass; however, he also identified the spouse of Malcolm's sister Christian Colquhoun as Robert Bumpass, which was clearly an error, as the latter line continues to the present day with their correct surname of Bumpers. Current biographers appear evenly divided on whether Jennet's last name is Bumpass or Bumpers. Little is known about this family, although Leander Cotton Calhoun indicated that this Malcolm was a Methodist minister in AL. Leander Cotton Calhoun did not include the first 4 children listed following. These were included by Jesse Thompson Calhoun in 1935 as the last born, and subsequently by W.D. Whatley to be the first four born of the marriage. In 1892, Leander Cotton Calhoun indicated that all the children were dead except Matilda, and in a later note, he indicated she died in 1898. No further histories were found for their children: Annie Mae Colquhoun, Vester Colquhoun, Dorthy Colquhoun, Boshel Colquhoun, John S. (Bud) Colquhoun born 1828, William Colquhoun born 1831, Isabell Colquhoun born 1833, Malcolm Colquhoun born 1834, and Matilda Colquhoun born 1839, except the following:
Malcolm COLQUHOUN married Martha DeWITT and had a child named Rhoda Calhoun, and
Matilda COLQUHOUN died 1898.
