The Corner Table

ANNE "NANCY" COLQUHOUN GRAHAM

Anne (Nancy) COLQUHOUN was born about 1773, and died 1/14/1838 in NC. She is buried at Bluff Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Cumberland Co., NC. Her gravestone reads: "Anne, wife of Daniel Graham, Sr., departed this life Jan. 14, 1838 aged 65 years. She was born in Scotland and died trusting in the merits of Jesus Christ". Nancy Colquhoun's parents are unknown. Anne Colquhoun married Daniel GRAHAM around 1794. He was born about 1763, died 11/8/1851, and is buried beside his wife in Section IV of Bluff Presbyterian Church Cemetery. His tombstone reads "Daniel Graham, Sr., a native of Scotland, departed this life in full faith and hope of a glorious resurrection on November 8, 1851, aged 88 years". Nancy is a common nickname for Anne, and she was often so-called in the records of Bluff Presbyterian Church, which also include baptismal records of some of the couple's children.

It is difficult to sort the family of Anne Colquhoun Graham from the public records, as the search must be through her husband Daniel Graham, whose ancestors were well established in Cumberland and Sampson Counties before the first census, and each generation of the family includes more than one Daniel Graham. The couple cannot be matched to either of two Daniel Grahams shown as head-of-family in 1790, both with several children, for none of Nancy's children were born before 1790.

Daniel and Anne Colquhoun Graham's family were listed in the 1820 census of Cumberland Co. Enumeration District No.4, Captain Howil's District. Nearby were John Bain, Daniel MacIntyre and Angus MacLellan, all with known connections to the family. This Daniel Graham appears as himself and wife over 45, 1 boy under 10, 1 boy 18-26, 1 girl under 10, 2 girls 10-16 and 1 girl 16-26. This record matches the known children of this couple: sons Angus about 10 and Daniel age 22; and daughters Christian age 9, Jennet 10-15, Catharine age 16 and Margaret age 18. Mary, Anne and Rachel were married before 1820. See comments on Kichen in details below.

The Daniel Graham shown in the 1840 Census out of Cumberland Co., NC, living next door to Daniel Bain, he being between the age of 70 and 80, is presumed to be the widower of Anne "Nancy" Colquhoun Graham. In the 1850 Census he is shown with no other persons in the house.

In "Genealogy of Malcolm Colquhoun, Scotch Emigrant" Jesse Thompson Calhoun listed the family of Daniel and Nancy Graham as: "Dougald Graham, m. Grizzelle McLellan, drowned in Black River; Angus Graham, did not m; Nancy Graham, m. Daniel Stewart, father of John and David; Margaret Graham, m. Daniel Bain (Administrator); Rachael Graham, m. Duncan Calhoun #5; Jennet Graham, m. A. Calhoun (moved to Lincoln Parish, La.); Christian Graham, m. Daniel Calhoun #18". The numbers refer to the descendants of Malcolm Colquhoun. Presumably the notation of "administrator" indicates he was aware of the probate of Daniel Graham's will, as Daniel Bain was the administrator of the estate. An incorrect interpretation of the documents of the estate may have caused him to incorrectly identify Mary as her sister Anne (Nancy). See discussion at the details of these individuals.

Daniel Graham left a will dated 1829, probated in 1852. In the Fall term 1853, a petition was brought in the Session Court of Equity by the heirs of Daniel Graham as tenants in common of the undivided real property of the estate, seeking an order permitting them to sell the land whole and divide the money among the various heirs in their share. The probate records include evidence of all the children, other than Kichen (discussed below) including Anne, formerly omitted from most genealogies published to the internet. Based on these and other public records, records of Bluff Presbyterian Church and genealogies of others who research the line, it appears the couple had possibly 10 children:

    Mary Graham
    Anne "Nancy" Graham
    Daniel Graham
    Kichen Graham
    Rachael Graham
    Margaret Graham
    Catharine Jane Graham
    Jennet Graham
    Augus or Angus Graham
    Christian Graham
Due to the length of the file, details of the first four children will be listed on this page 1; to see details of the families and children of Margaret, Catharine Jane, Jennet, Angus, and Christian Graham, go to page 2.

  1. Mary GRAHAM, child of Daniel and Anne "Nancy" Colquhoun Graham born 12/17/1794 (christened 1/4/1795 at Bluff Presbyterian Church), married Dougald STEWART about 1811. He was the son of John and Effie McCreany Stewart baptized at Bluff Presbyterian Church 10/29/1787. Dougald Stewart's mother's maiden name is spelled as it appears on the Bluff baptistery records; however, the public records of Cumberland County include alternate spellings of McCranie. Dougald is alternately spelled Dugal, Dugald and Dougal in the Church records. The baptismal records of Bluff Presbyterian Church include some of their children.

Mary Graham Stewart was omitted from the listing by Jesse Thompson Calhoun in "Genealogy of Malcolm Colquhoun, Scotch Emigrant", and her sister was incorrectly identified as the mother of two of the children of this couple. As Nancy is a common nickname for Ann, some genealogists of this line have attempted to reconcile his error by calling this daughter Mary Anne; however both were clearly identified as children of the couple in the probate of the estate of Daniel Graham. Frank Graham Stewart ("Documentation of a Stewart-Graham Lineage in North Carolina") includes family records of both sisters.

Dougald Stewart died about 1836, and in 1846 Mary Graham Stewart remarried. Her second husband was Felix SIMONTON, born 12/18/1785 in Iredell Co., NC. At the time the heirs of Daniel Graham petitioned for sale of the land of the estate, the couple was identified as "Felix Simonton and his wife Mary formerly Mary Graham of Parish of Claiborne, LA". Mary Graham Stewart Simonton died 11/7/1870, Felix Simonton died 8/30/1875. Both are buried in Vienna Cemetery, Claiborne Parish, LA.

Including the children identified by the Church registry, Dougald and Mary Graham Stewart had at least 9 children. Details on each child as known, follow:

Effie STEWART born 1/8/1812, died 1819, probably baptized at The Bluff, although the baptismal records of Bluff Presbyterian Church are missing between 1812 and 1814.

John STEWART born 3/7/1815, baptized 4/30 at Bluff, married Nancy Jane COLQUHOUN 1/7/1837. She was born 2/23/1818 (baptized 3/29/1818 at Bluff), the daughter of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun. The couple had 13 children: Dougald Stewart born 11/11/1837, Mary Jane Stewart born 7/10/1839, Nancy Caroline "Carrie" Stewart born 4/30/1841, Sarah E. Stewart born 12/28/1842, Margaret Isabel Stewart born 10/14/1844, Frances "Fannie" Stewart born 11/25/1846, Martha "Mattie" Stewart born 10/25/1848, John Calhoun Stewart born 1/09/1852, Elizabeth Virginia Stewart born 1/30/1853, Catherine Amanda Stewart born 2/22/1855, Virena Florence Stewart born 3/19/1858, Arrilla Stewart and Melissa Stewart both born 8/16/1859. John Stewart died 8/11/1865, and according to Leander Cotton Calhoun, Nancy Jane Colquhoun Stewart lived many years as a widow until her death 9/9/1888. She was described as a small woman who looked rather delicate, but managed to sustain the large family after her husband's death.

Daniel Graham STEWART born 5/27/1818, baptized 8/9 at Bluff Presbyterian Church (called "Donald Grayham" in the records), died 4/1836. As noted, it appears that Donald was a common nickname for Daniel.

David STEWART born 10/28/1820, baptized 3/18/1821 at Bluff Presbyterian Church, married Sarah Margaret COLQUHOUN 1/13/1847. She was born 3/15/1829, the child of John and Nancy Buchanan Colquhoun. The couple had 6 children; however the names of only 5 are known to date: Amanda Stewart born 10/20/1847, Anna Marsy Stewart born 10/10/1849, John J. Stewart born 5/10/1852, Harland A. Stewart born 7/31/1855 and Angus Augustus Stewart born 2/23/1857. Amanda and Angus both survived to majority; the rest, including the unknown child, died before Sarah Margaret died in 1859.

Anne "Nancy" STEWART born 2/25/1823, baptized 8/25 at Bluff Presbyterian Church (called "Anny" in the records), died 9/1824.

Dougald STEWART born 9/30/1826 married (i) Mary Elizabeth CULBERTSON 12/6/1846 in Coosa Co., AL, and (ii) Sarah Frances CULBERTSON 4/21/1864 in Claiborne Par., LA. He fathered 11 children by the two marriages.

Duncan STEWART born 12/15/1828; nothing further has been provided about this child.

Augustus STEWART, born 5/11/1832, died 5/27/1862.

Mary Elizabeth STEWART, born 7/27/1835, married Augustus Chamberlin SIMONTON. Mary Stewart Simonton died 6/3/1898 in Claiborne Parish, LA and is buried beside her mother and stepfather in Vienna Cemetery.

  2. Anne "Nancy" GRAHAM, child of Daniel and Anne "Nancy" Colquhoun Graham born 1796 (not christened at Bluff Presbyterian Church), died 1885 in Sampson County. This child was living at the time her father's will was probated, and is documented in the petition for sale of his lands. Details of this family appear in Frank Graham Stewart's book, "Documentation of a Stewart-Graham Lineage in North Carolina". She married Daniel STEWART about 1815. He was the son of John and Effie McCreany Stewart born 1793 (no baptismal record found at Bluff Presbyterian Church, although the records are sparce between 1791 and 1794), died 1875 in Sampson Co. This is the couple incorrectly identified by Jesse Thompson Calhoun as the parents of John and David Stewart, who married granddaughters of Malcolm Colquhoun (see discussion at Mary Graham, above). This couple did have at least 7 children. Details of their children and families follow.

Catherine STEWART born about 1816 Sampson Co., NC (no baptism record found for the period)

Daniel STEWART born 1818 (baptised 3/1/1818 at Bluff Presbyterian Church, he and his father both called "Donald" in the record), died after 1880 Sampson Co. This child did not marry.

Dougald STEWART born 1820 (no baptism record found), died after 1860 Sampson Co. This child did not marry.

John STEWART born 1825, died 1866 in Sampson Co. He married Sarah PAGE in 1859. She born in 1833 and died after 1880 Sampson Co.

Angus STEWART born 1827 in Sampson Co.

Charles STEWART born 1829, died after 1880. He married Mary M. GIBBS in 1858. She was born 1834 in Sampson Co.

Duncan STEWART born 1831 in Sampson Co., NC

  3. Daniel GRAHAM, child of Daniel and Anne "Nancy" Colquhoun Graham born 1798 (baptized 8/19 at Bluff Presbyterian Church), married Grizzelle McLELLAN 5/1/1821. She was the daughter of Daniel and Margaret MacGougan McLellan, born 1798 (baptized 5/19/1798 at Bluff Presbyterian Church, where her name was written Girsill). Daniel appears to be the child identified by Jesse Thompson Calhoun as "Dougald Graham", who married Grizzelle McLellan, and "downed in Black River".

It is of note to persons tracing their line out of this couple that the McLellan family were early residents of Carolina Colonies, and Grizzelle's father, Daniel McLellan, received a pension for his military service in the Revolutionary War. Grizzelle's mother's maiden name is here spelled as it is in the baptismal records of Bluff Presbyterian Church, although the public records include alternate spellings of McGugan, and several families descended from this line use the spelling of McGoogan. Daniel and Grizzelle McLellan Graham had at least four children: Rachael, Mary Margaret, Daniel and Angus Graham. Details follow:

Rachael GRAHAM born 6/12/1823, died 9/16/1908, and is buried in McMillan Presbyterian Church Cemetery. She married Neil McMILLAN 8/17/1842; he was born 8/11/1817. Neil McMillan was one of the founders of the McMillan Presbyterian Church in Cumberland Co., NC, and when he died 1/19/1912, he was buried beside his wife in the cemetery. The couple had at least one son and three daughters. The son, Daniel Alexander McMillan was born 7/14/1845. The couple's three daughters apparently did not marry; they were buried as McMillans in the McMillan Presbyterian Church Cemetery: Mary C. McMillan 5 Aug 1843 - 21 Mar 1935; Margaret A. McMillan 1 May 1851 - 17 Oct 1933; and Sarah McMillan 15 Mar 1853 - 21 Jan 1945.

Mary Margaret GRAHAM, born about 1825, married Henry PRICE before 1853. The couple appeared as petitioners in the motion to sell the real property out of the estate of Daniel Graham, Deceased, in the Fall Term 1853 of the Session Court of Equity in Cumberland Co., NC.

Daniel GRAHAM born 8/13/1828 married Flora Anne McINTYRE 10/17/1848; she was born about 1827. The couple had at least six children: Daniel Alexander Graham born 9/7/1849, John Graham born 1/6/1851, Catharine Ann Graham born 2/4/1853, Mary Graham born 6/26/1855, Emily Graham born 7/15/1858 and Isabella Graham born 5/19/1860. Flora McIntyre Graham died 9/7/1903, age 78 years, and is buried in the Graham Family Cemetery in Cumberland Co., NC beside her husband.

Angus GRAHAM born after 1828, appeared as a petitioner in the motion to sell the real property out of the estate of Daniel Graham, Deceased, in the Fall Term 1853 of the Session Court of Equity in Cumberland Co., NC.

  4. Kichen GRAHAM, child of Daniel and Anne "Nancy" Colquhoun Graham, born 1800 (christened 10/5 at Bluff Presbyterian Church), may have died early. This daughter is generally assumed to have been named Christian (noting the name of Christian MacCorquodale Colquhoun was misspelled on the page following in the records out of Bluff Presbyterian Church), although she is not the same person as the Christian Graham, daughter of the couple, who married Daniel Colquhoun 2/5/1840. The latter individual was born 6/23/1811, according to the records of the family and her gravestone. This Kichen Graham appears to have died before the 1820 census; however, if the couple had two children named Christian, it is almost certain that the first died before the second was born. An alternative explanation is presented in the next entry.

  5. Rachael GRAHAM, child of Daniel and Anne "Nancy" Colquhoun Graham born about 1800, is not included in the baptismal records of Bluff Presbyterian Church, unless the name "Kichen" is some derivative of a family nickname for Rachael (perhaps adopted for another Rachael in the extended family). In that instance, Rachael may have been the child christened 10/5 at Bluff. Otherwise, her birth between the baptized children may indicate an early death of the child baptized as Kichen. Rachael could not have been born much after 1801, as she married Duncan COLQUHOUN 1819. He was born 9/01/1795 (christened 10/25/1795 at Bluff Presbyterian Church), the son of Malcolm and Christian MacCorquodale Colquhoun. Rachael died before 1853; Duncan died 8/24/1859, both in AL. The couple had 11 children. The records of the Fall Session of the Court of Equity (Heirs of Daniel Graham petition for sale of the lands of the estate) include a power of attorney for representation of the living heirs of Rachael Graham: "Malcom Calhoun, Daniel Calhoun, John A. Calhoun, Nancy Calhoun, Mary M. Calhoun & Christian McLeod formerly Christian Calhoun, children and heirs at law of Rachel Calhoun, wife of Duncan Calhoun (now deceased) and Duncan Calhoun, guardian of William M. Calhoun, Jane E. Calhoun, Duncan J. Calhoun and David [called Daniel in one document] F. Calhoun, minor heirs of the said Rachel Calhoun, deceased". [Note the statement "Rachel Calhoun, wife of Duncan Calhoun (now deceased)" indicates SHE was deceased, not him; he appeared in petition and posted a property bond as guardian of the minor children in the suit]. Short histories of the families of this line follow.

Daniel COLQUHOUN born 1820, never married. He died about 1869.

Malcolm COLQUHOUN, born 2/19/1822, married Mary Elmira (Emily) HICKS 12/29/1850. She was born 11/06/1832, the sister of Golden Hicks, who married Mary Colquhoun, daughter of Daniel and Christian Graham Colquhoun. The couple had 7 children: Emily Jane born 10/26/1851; John Duncan born 9/20/1853; Martha Alice born 12/31/1854; Mary Susan born 1/22/1857; William Monroe born 12/06/1858; Louella Vastine born 1/31/1860 and James Graham born 2/07/1869. Malcolm died 1850; Mary Hicks Colquhoun died 1901. Both are buried in Alabama Church Cemetery, Sibley, LA.

Nancy COLQUHOUN, born about 1824, never married; she died about 1871.

John Archibald COLQUHOUN, born 3/18/1827, married Arsenia McLEOD 1/1/1857. Arsenia was the daughter of Daniel and Matilda Robinson McLeod and granddaughter of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod. The couple had 2 children: Annie Blanche Colquhoun born 11/05/1857 and John Archibald Colquhoun, Jr. born 1/26/1860.

Christian COLQUHOUN born 8/29/1829, married her cousin, John McLEOD 12/25/1850. He was the son of Neill and Nancy Colquhoun McLeod, born 9/22/1829. They had 5 children before John died in the Civil War, 1864: Frances Isabella McLeod born 7/5/1852, William Allen McLeod born 9/16/1854, Lionel Erastus McLeod born 6/26/1857, Archibald Lonza McLeod born 12/27/1859, and Mary Alice McLeod born 6/11/1862.

Mary M. COLQUHOUN, born about 1832-33, never married; she died before 1860. Some genealogies list Mary as born about 1823; however, the estimated year appears more likely. She was included as a minor in the petition for sale of the real property out of Daniel Graham's estate in 1853, then included as an adult in the papers of 1854. Her age was given as 20 in the 1850 census.

William Wallace COLQUHOUN born 11/6/1834, married Celia CHAPMAN 1/17/1861; she was born 12/10/1841. The couple had one child before William Wallace Colquhoun died 7/13/1865: Mary William Colquhoun, born 7/13/1862.

Jane E. COLQUHOUN, born 8/25/1837, never married. She died 11/02/1921. This child was identified in the petition for sale of her grandfather's real property as "James E", apparently a typo combining her name with that of her younger brother. The affidavit for the administration is correct.

James Duncan COLQUHOUN, born about 1841, married Evie PATTON before 1874. The couple had one child: Samuel D. Calhoun, born 5/24/1874. This individual was identified as Duncan J. on at least one document of his grandfather's estate.

David F. COLQUHOUN, born 1844, never married. He died in Mobile, AL 1862.

Elizabeth COLQUHOUN, born after 1850, is included by some genealogies as a child of this family. She was not included as a living child of the couple in Fall, 1853, when the heirs of Daniel Graham petitioned for sale of lands out of the estate. Therefore, a death in infancy is presumed.
